The biggest Royal Rumble ever took place this Saturday, February 1st at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana and in one of the biggest surprises in years at a WWE Premium Live Event “Main Event” Jey Uso lived up to his name and captured the biggest win of his career in eliminating John Cena to advance to one of the Main Event slots of Wrestlemania this April.
Before we get to that match let’s get to the event that had the popular predicted finish as the “Queen” Charlotte Flair returned for the first time in over a year and in a fashion similar to Cody Rhodes a few years ago, she made her return with a win in the Royal Rumble.
Trish Startus and Alexa Bliss made surprise returns with Bliss probably returning on a regular basis. Jordynne Grace fresh off of signing her contract with WWE had a big showing evening teasing a reunion with old TNA Wrestling partner Naomi (Trinity) much to the displeasure of the EST Bianca Belair. Then of course the final surprise a return of Nikki Bella to the ring as the final entrant.
Nia Jax showed she is still an Irresistible Force in eliminating 9 Superstars before being eliminated by Flair. The Queen then dispatched the “Prodigy” Roxanne Perez to win her 2nd Royal Rumble. It maybe Tiffy Time for the Queen in April.
The Tag Team Titles were defended by DIY and Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa went against the Tag Team Legends the Motor City Guns. Chris Sabin and Alex Shelley split the first two falls setting up the deciding third fall only to be met by outside interference by a disguised Street Profits. This is the set up of the best Tag Team Division in the WWE in years as these are all established Teams in the Title picture. There will be more to come from all three teams on the road to WrestleMania.
The “American Nightmare” defended his title and was the winner without much surprise but the third of the Championship Matches against “KO” Kevin Owens shows that it is a different era in the WWE as Rhodes brought his match style with him from his “Bullet Club” days. The match included some amazing spots on the ladders and ended with the Alabama Slam through the Ladders that left Owens in a heap. A much more violent match then the prior generation of the WWE. Given the result of the Men’s Rumble, we’ll get Rhodes opponent in the main event of Elimination Chamber coming next month.
Finally the Men’s Rumble ended the night with betting favorites CM Punk and John Cena coming up short. The start was a Lucha legend battle as Rey Mysterio Jr and Penta started the event. Not may surprises as really only AJ Styles returning was a surprise. TNA World Champion Joe Hendry got a big response to his entry into the rumble only to be tossed out by the next entrant Roman Reigns in his first Rumble in years.
Eventually Reigns and Jacob Fatu got into a mini “Bloodline” Civil War complete with Michael Cole calling the pairing a future WrestleMania Main Event.
CM Punk, Reigns and Seth Rollins got into it as Punk eliminated both of them and after being eliminated by Logan Paul the tree brawled off the stage in an another possible WrestleMania match. Remember the “Wise Man” Paul Heyman still owes Punk a favor.
Finally, the end came as USO eliminated the overwhelming betting favorite in the UK, Cena. Seemingly setting up a rematch at WrestleMania with the “Ring General” Gunther.
