The Maple Leafs bookended their road trip with overtime wins, closing out their travels with a 4-3 extra period victory over the Jets Saturday night in Winnipeg.
A game removed from a heartbreaking loss in Vegas, where Toronto lost its lead in the final seconds, the Maple Leafs turned the tables, came back from a two-goal third-period deficit, and defeated the red-hot Jets on a Max Domi game-winning goal.
The prospect of Toronto adding two points to its total did not look promising early on. After neither team managed a goal in the first, Alex Iafallo opened the scoring for the Jets in the second. On the man advantage, the Winnipeg winger deflected a Logan Stanley point shot past Dennis Hildeby for a 1-0 lead at 2:34.
Kyle Connor doubled the margin at the 8:59 mark with his 23rd of the season. Gabriel Vilardi won a battle along the boards, the puck squirted out to Connor, who drove to the Toronto net unbothered and slammed the puck past Hildeby to make it 2-0.
Auston Matthews cut the lead in half 23 seconds later, sniping home a beautiful Maxi Domi feed past Connor Hellebuyck at 9:22.
The score stayed 2-1 until Nino Niederreiter pushed the margin back to two with a rebound goal 2:28 into the third period.
Oliver Ekman-Larsson responded for the Leafs, firing home a shot from circles off another great pass, this one courtesy of Nicholas Robertson, to trim the lead to 3-2 at 5:58.
Then, with just under four and a half minutes left, Bobby McMann netted the equalizer, redirecting an Ekman-Larsson shot to the back of the net.
Max Domi completed the comeback in overtime, taking a two-on-one feed from Matthews and lifting the puck over a sprawled-out Hellebuyck for the winner.
Next up, the Maple Leafs return home to take on the Minnesota Wild Monday night at Scotiabank Arena.
