The Toronto Blue Jays Open The Season With a WIN!

The wait was finally over on Friday March 27, 2026 as the Toronto Blue Jays returned home to Rogers Centre to open the season in front of their fans. But this was not just any home opener. It started with a powerful moment as the team and the crowd celebrated last year’s incredible run with a ceremony recognizing the 2025 American League Championship. The banner went up, the crowd roared, and for a few minutes the entire building felt like it was back in October again.

As a fan who lived every second of that playoff run last year, it honestly gave me chills. You could feel the pride in the building. This team came so close to winning it all. The hunger to get back there again is real.

Once the ceremony wrapped up though, the game itself settled into something a little quieter than the energy in the building. If I am being honest, it was a bit of a slow burner for a home opener. Not exactly the fireworks people might expect on night one of a new season, but in baseball sometimes you just take the win and move on, and that is exactly what the Jays did.

The Blue Jays defeated the Athletics 3 to 2 in a tight game that stayed close all night.

Early on it was all about pitching. Kevin Gausman looked sharp to start the season, striking out six hitters in his first three perfect innings and setting the tone on the mound. The A’s starter Luis Severino matched him for a while, keeping Toronto quiet through the early part of the game.

The first real spark came from Oakland. Shea Langeliers launched the first home run of the season for the Athletics to give them a 1 to 0 lead. It was a reminder that even in a quiet game, one swing can change things.

Toronto answered in the fifth inning. A defensive miscue from the Athletics helped the Jays plate two runs and suddenly the home side had a 2 to 1 lead. It was not flashy offense but it got the job done.

Things stayed tight all the way into the ninth inning.

Then Shea Langeliers struck again for Oakland with his second home run of the night, tying the game 2 to 2 and briefly silencing the crowd.

But the Jays were not about to let opening night slip away.

In the bottom of the ninth, Kazuma Okamoto got on base and Ernie Clement delivered a key double to push the winning run into scoring position. With two outs, Andrés Giménez stepped up and ripped a single that brought the runner home and ended the game. Walk off win. Rogers Centre erupted.

Season Outlook

If this opener showed us anything, it is that this team is still built to win tight games.

Last year proved that this group can go toe to toe with the best teams in baseball. The core is still here with stars like Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette, George Springer, and key pitching from Kevin Gausman. The addition of players like Andrés Giménez also adds depth and defense up the middle which could be huge over a long season.

It is obviously very early, but the expectations are massive. After coming within reach of a championship last year, the goal is clear. Get back to October and finish the job this time.

Game one of 162 might not have been the most electric home opener we have ever seen. But the banner ceremony reminded everyone just how special this team already is and the walk off win was a perfect way to start the next chapter.

And if this season ends the way we all hope, we might see another banner going up next year.

👏 Go Jays Go 👏
