Toronto FC Battle San Jose to 1 to 1 Draw at BMO Field
Toronto FC earned a hard fought point Saturday night, battling the San Jose Earthquakes to a 1 to 1 draw at BMO Field in Toronto. Against one of Major League Soccer’s hottest clubs, the Reds showed resilience, depth, and plenty of fight despite a lengthy injury list.
Fast Start for Toronto FC
The match could not have started much better for Toronto. Just 110 seconds after kickoff, Dániel Sallói opened the scoring with a composed finish into the far corner. The play developed beautifully through Jonathan Osorio and Markus Cimermancic, with Osorio officially receiving the assist while Cimermancic played a key role in the buildup.
The goal was Sallói’s fourth of the 2026 MLS season, extending his team lead and continuing his impressive start in Toronto.
San Jose Responds Quickly
The lead lasted only a few minutes. In the 13th minute, Preston Judd redirected a dangerous free kick from Niko Tsakiris to level the score at 1 to 1.
Both sides continued to create chances throughout an entertaining first half, with Toronto matching the pace and intensity of one of MLS’s top teams.
Late Drama at BMO Field
Toronto nearly found a winner in the closing minutes. In the 86th minute, Sallói chipped the goalkeeper and looked destined for his second goal of the night, but San Jose defender Reid Roberts produced an outstanding goal line clearance to keep the match level.
That save preserved a valuable road point for San Jose and denied Toronto a signature home victory.
Toronto FC Season Update
With the draw, Toronto FC improved to 3 wins, 3 losses, and 5 draws through 11 MLS matches. The Reds now sit on 14 points in the Eastern Conference standings.
Toronto is currently unbeaten in four of its last five league matches, an encouraging sign for a club looking to return to playoff contention after several difficult seasons.
While the recent run has included multiple draws, the overall level of play has been noticeably improved compared to recent years. Robin Fraser’s side has shown greater defensive organization, better midfield control, and an ability to compete with the league’s strongest teams.
Injury Challenges Continue
Toronto once again had to navigate a depleted roster.
Unavailable players included:
- Josh Sargent
- Jules-Anthony Vilsaint
- Richie Laryea
- Matheus Pereira
- Djordje Mihailovic
- Nicksoen Gomis
The injury situation opened the door for several Toronto FC II players. Micah Chisholm made his first team debut, while Antone Bossenberry, Fletcher Bank, and Jahmarie Nolan were also included in the matchday squad.
In a major boost, veteran defender Walker Zimmerman returned as a late substitute after recently welcoming his third child.
