The Toronto Blue Jays avoided a four-game sweep by defeating the Tampa Bay Rays 3-1 at Rogers Centre, snapping a difficult stretch and ending their homestand on a positive note.
Shane Bieber sets the tone
Shane Bieber delivered one of his best outings since joining Toronto, working seven strong innings while allowing just one run on three hits, issuing no walks and striking out three. He kept the Rays off balance all afternoon before turning the game over to the bullpen. Tyler Rogers pitched a scoreless eighth, and Louis Varland closed the door in the ninth for his 21st save of the season.
Veteran bats come through
The Blue Jays scored early and never looked back.
George Springer collected two hits and drove in a run.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. also had two hits with an RBI.
Yohendrick Pinango and Myles Straw contributed key offensive plays as Toronto added insurance runs in the third and seventh innings.
Tampa Bay’s only run came on an RBI from Yandy Díaz, but the Rays couldn’t solve Bieber or Toronto’s bullpen for the rest of the afternoon.
Roster updates
Before the game, Toronto recalled Davis Schneider and Adam Macko, while Patrick Corbin was placed on the injured list. Schneider reached base with a walk in his return.
Looking ahead
The victory improves morale after a challenging homestand and gives the Blue Jays some momentum as they prepare for their next series against the Boston Red Sox. With the trade deadline approaching, every win becomes increasingly important as Toronto looks to stay in the postseason race.
