October 25 · Coca-Cola Coliseum ·

The Toronto Marlies suffered a frustrating shutout defeat on Sunday, falling 3–0 to the Rockford IceHogs as the visitors completed a weekend sweep at Coca-Cola Coliseum.

Rockford’s special teams and second-period scoring proved decisive, while Toronto struggled to turn its offensive opportunities into goals

Period-by-period breakdown

First period — Scoreless opening

The teams battled through a physical opening period. Rockford generated the better early chances, outshooting Toronto 9–2.

A fight between Rockford’s Dillon Boucher and Toronto’s Michael Pezzetta added intensity, but neither side found the back of the net before the first intermission.

Second period — Rockford takes control

Rockford broke the deadlock with 7:32 remaining in the period.

Gavin Hayes set up Jiří Felcman, whose backhand attempt slipped past Toronto goaltender Artur Akhtyamov to make it 1–0.

The IceHogs doubled their advantage on the power play just over two minutes later. Derrick Pouliot’s shot produced a rebound, and Hayes was in position to finish for his second goal of the game.

Toronto entered the third period trailing 2–0, facing a significant challenge against a disciplined Rockford defence.

Third period — Power play seals the result

Rockford struck again early in the final period.

Dominic Toninato fired from the point, and Nick Lardis redirected the puck into the net to extend the lead to 3–0.

Toronto could not mount a comeback, while Rockford protected its advantage to secure the shutout victory.

Three stars of the game

1. Gavin Hayes — Rockford

Two goals

Hayes helped break open the game with a goal and later capitalized on a power-play rebound.

2. Drew Commesso — Rockford

16 saves · Shutout

Commesso stopped all 16 Toronto shots to record his first win of the season.

3. Jiří Felcman — Rockford

One goal

Felcman scored the opening goal, giving the IceHogs the breakthrough they needed.

What went wrong for Toronto

Slow start: The Marlies managed only two shots in the opening period while Rockford established the physical tempo.

Penalty trouble: Rockford converted its power-play opportunities into crucial goals.

Lack of finishing: Toronto failed to score despite generating chances throughout the game.

Outstanding opposing goaltending: Commesso stopped every shot he faced to deny the Marlies any opportunity to get back into the contest.

What’s next

The Marlies will look to regroup before their next scheduled game against the Hershey Bears on Friday, October 30.

Toronto will need a stronger start, improved discipline and more traffic around the opposing crease to return to the win column.

Final takeaway: Rockford delivered a complete performance, combining special-teams execution with a perfect goaltending display.

For Toronto, the shutout defeat highlights the need to convert offensive pressure into goals and avoid giving opponents repeated power-play opportunities.
