The Toronto Blue Jays dropped an 8-3 decision to the New York Yankees on Sunday at Yankee Stadium, allowing New York to take two of three games in the weekend series.
Toronto and New York were tied 2-2 entering the sixth inning, but the Yankees broke the game open. Three consecutive singles loaded the bases before Trent Grisham drew a go-ahead walk. Ben Rice then delivered a two-run single to right field, putting New York ahead 5-2. Spencer Jones followed with an RBI double to extend the advantage.
José Soriano started for Toronto and worked five-plus innings, allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out seven and walking three. The Blue Jays’ bullpen was unable to stop the Yankees’ late surge. Jazz Chisholm Jr. added a two-run homer in the seventh, while Grisham homered in the eighth.
Toronto’s offense produced only five hits and went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position. Alejandro Kirk drove in a run with a single in the eighth, while Daz Cameron and rookie Brett Bateman each contributed sacrifice flies earlier in the game.
Despite the loss, Toronto finished its difficult stretch against Boston, New York and Tampa Bay with an 8-5 record and remains firmly in the American League playoff race. The Blue Jays had gone 13-5 over their previous 18 games entering Sunday’s finale, giving them plenty of reason for optimism despite dropping the Yankees series.
