The Toronto Blue Jays opened their three-game series against the Seattle Mariners in dominant fashion Friday night, rolling to an 8-1 victory at Rogers Centre.
George Springer led Toronto’s offensive attack with a perfect 4-for-4 performance, including a solo home run. Nathan Lukes and Kazuma Okamoto also went deep as the Blue Jays produced eight runs on 12 hits.
Seattle struck first when Dominic Canzone launched a solo home run in the opening inning. The Blue Jays responded immediately, however, scoring three times in the bottom of the first. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. delivered an RBI double, while Okamoto added a sacrifice fly and Andrés Giménez drove in another run with a single.
Toronto extended its advantage in the fifth inning. Lukes hit a solo homer before Springer followed with a second-deck blast to left field, giving the Blue Jays a commanding 5-1 lead.
Okamoto added another highlight in the sixth, hitting a solo home run for his 27th of the season. Toronto then added two more runs in the seventh, including an RBI single from Myles Straw and another run that scored on a Seattle fielding error.
Dylan Cease delivered a strong start for Toronto, allowing one run on four hits over six innings while striking out eight. CJ Van Eyk finished the game with a scoreless ninth inning.
The victory was an important response for the Blue Jays, who had suffered a 13-2 loss to the Kansas City Royals in their previous game. Toronto improved its form with one of its most complete performances of the recent stretch.
