TFC Fell 2-1 to Atlanta United

The unbeaten streak has finally come to an end for Toronto FC. On a cold and rainy Saturday afternoon at BMO Field, a depleted Reds lineup fell 2-1 to Atlanta United, marking their first defeat in nearly two months. This result halts a remarkable seven-match unbeaten run and snaps a 13-game unbeaten streak at home that stretched back to June 2025.

Match Recap: A Tale of Two Halves

The opening 45 minutes remained scoreless, though not without drama. Atlanta’s Cayman Togashi appeared to find the net in the 22nd minute, but the goal was ultimately overturned by VAR for offside. Toronto struggled to find offensive rhythm, largely due to a massive list of absent starters.

The deadlock broke early in the second half. Following a foul on Josh Sargent, Atlanta’s Alexey Miranchuk stepped up in the 48th minute and curled a left-footed free kick into the top corner. Atlanta doubled their lead in the 67th minute when Tristan Muyumba finished a clinical sequence of passes in the TFC box, assisted by Fafà Picault and teenage rookie Cooper Sanchez.

Toronto responded four minutes later to breathe life back into the stadium. Young striker Emilio Aristizábal scored his first career MLS goal with a pinpoint header into the top left corner. The play was made possible by a brilliant cross from Kobe Franklin, with Alonso Coello also picking up an assist. While Jules-Anthony Vilsaint seemingly tied the game in the 85th minute, his goal was waved off for offside, leaving the Reds just short of another dramatic comeback.

Current Form and Eastern Conference Standings

Despite the loss, Toronto FC remains in a competitive position in the Eastern Conference with a record of 3-3-4 and 13 points. The recent run of form has been a massive improvement over the 2023 campaign. Only days before this match, the club secured a wild 3-3 draw against Philadelphia Union, highlighted by goalkeeper Luka Gavran scoring a historic stoppage-time header.

Roster Challenges and Injury Updates

Head Coach Robin Fraser is currently navigating a significant injury crisis. The following players were unavailable for the April 25 clash:

  • Richie Laryea: Out for approximately one month with a thigh injury.
  • Matheus Pereira: Sidelined for 10-12 weeks following groin surgery.
  • Djordje Mihailovic, Henry Wingo, Theo Corbeanu, and Nicksoen Gomis: All currently managing various setbacks.
  • Walker Zimmerman: Missed the match to be with his wife for the birth of their third child.

To fill the gaps, TFC utilized short-term call-ups from TFC II, including Reid Fisher, Jackson Gilman, and Antone Bossenberry. Additionally, the club is preparing for a new era following the mutual contract termination of Lorenzo Insigne, which opens a Designated Player slot for the 2026 season.

Upcoming Schedule at BMO Field

The Reds will look to start a new streak with a busy home stand in early May:

  • May 2, 2026 (1:00 PM ET): vs. San Jose Earthquakes
  • May 5, 2026 (7:30 PM ET): vs. Atlético Ottawa (Canadian Championship)
  • May 9, 2026 (1:00 PM ET): vs. Inter Miami CF

TFC 👏👏👏
