The Sabres were on the wrong side of a goalie duel, losing 2-1 to the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday night at KeyBank Center.

For two and a half periods, Colten Ellis looked impenetrable, but the Senators’ relentless attack finally broke through with two late goals to secure the win.

Ellis and his Senators counterpart, Samuel Ersson, were both spectacular. Ellis stopped 28 of 30 shots, while Ersson turned aside 24 of the 25 shots he faced.

The Sabres got on the board first at the 14-minute mark of the second period. Peyton Krebs redirected a Tage Thompson shot from the top of the circles to make it 1-0 for Buffalo.

The Senators finally got to Ellis at 11:33 of the third period, when Shane Pinto tapped home a rebound to tie the game at one.

Ottawa took the lead late in the game on an odd-man rush. Tim Stützle found Michael Amadio, whose wrist shot beat Ellis with just over three minutes remaining.

The Sabres couldn’t find the equalizer and fell 2-1.

Next up, the Sabres welcome the Columbus Blue Jackets to KeyBank Center on Friday night.
