Bichette, Bassitt help push the Blue Jays to a series win over the White Sox

The Toronto Blue Jays secured a much needed series win against the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday night.

Chris Bassitt (3-6, 5.03) took the mound and faced off against Nick Nastrini (0-2, 7.88).

Bassitt had a great night on the bump, throwing 7 innings, allowing no runs over five hits, while walking two and striking out four to secure his fourth win of the year.

Nastrini, a rookie, making just his third start in the big leagues, got called up to start in Toronto. Evidently, it didn’t go his way, as he gave up eight runs on seven hits, to go along with six walks over 3 1/3 innings.

Both teams went scoreless in the first inning, but the Blue Jays offence exploded in the bottom half of the 2nd.

Justin Turner, Alejandro Kirk and Kevin Kiermaier all got on to load the bases with two outs. Davis Schneider then stepped up to the plate and came through with a two RBI single to give the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead. Daulton Varsho then tripled to double the Toronto lead to 4-0. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. then singled in Varsho to extend the lead to 5-0.

The Blue Jays’ lead would get pushed to 7-0 after Bo Bichette blasted a two run homer to keep the barrel party going. With Bichette’s homer, the Jays revealed that they had brought back the famous home run jacket.

Toronto’s lead would get bigger in the bottom of the 4th with a Bo Bichette RBI single, on the same play, a second run would score on a throwing error by Dominic Fletcher to extend the lead to 9-0.

The shutout bid for the Jays would go away in the top of the 8th, giving the White Sox their only two runs on a Tommy Pham solo homer and a Paul DeJong sacrifice fly.

Nate Pearson would shut the door in the top of the 9th to secure the 9-2 win for the Blue Jays, giving them their first series victory since they won two of three against the San Diego Padres from April 19-21.

The Blue Jays will embark on a seven game road trip as they head to Comerica Park tomorrow afternoon. Kevin Gausman (2-3, 4.89) will get the start as he squares off against Jack Flaherty (1-3, 3.79) for the first of four games against the Detroit Tigers.
