The Toronto Blue Jays bounced back in impressive fashion Thursday, defeating the Tampa Bay Rays 5-1 at Tropicana Field to take the series.
Toronto’s offence was powered by the long ball. Kazuma Okamoto, Nathan Lukes and Daz Cameron each hit solo home runs, while George Springer delivered a key two-run single in the seventh inning to give the Blue Jays valuable breathing room.
Shane Bieber was outstanding on the mound, pitching seven strong innings. He allowed just one run on four hits while striking out seven Rays hitters, earning the victory. Tampa Bay’s only run came in the fourth inning when Junior Caminero drove in Chandler Simpson.
Okamoto opened the scoring with his 26th home run of the season in the second inning. After Tampa Bay tied the game, Lukes and Cameron went deep in the fifth to put Toronto ahead for good. Springer’s two-run hit later extended the lead to four runs.
Lukes also contributed defensively with a spectacular leaping catch that helped shut down a Rays rally.
The Blue Jays finished with 12 hits and received strong relief work to close out the game. The victory gave Toronto a series win after Wednesday’s narrow 7-6 loss.
One concern for Toronto was shortstop Andrés Giménez, who exited the game with right hamstring tightness.
