Toronto FC produced a dramatic comeback victory Wednesday night, rallying from an early deficit to defeat Eastern Conference-leading Nashville SC 2–1 at BMO Field. The result extended Toronto’s unbeaten run to seven MLS matches and capped an impressive three-game homestand.
First half
Nashville struck almost immediately. In the 3rd minute, Toronto midfielder Niklas Dorsch inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, giving the visitors a 1–0 lead.
Toronto responded by taking greater control of possession and creating several chances, but Nashville goalkeeper Brian Schwake helped preserve the advantage. The Reds went into halftime trailing 1–0.
Sallói brings TFC level
Toronto continued pushing after the break, and head coach Robin Fraser made a series of changes to inject energy into the attack.
The breakthrough came in the 72nd minute. Dániel Sallói rose inside the penalty area and headed Theo Corbeanu’s cross into the bottom corner to make it 1–1.
Sallói’s equalizer changed the momentum completely. Toronto began hunting for the winner while Nashville increasingly concentrated on protecting a point.
Aristizábal completes the comeback
The decisive moment arrived deep into stoppage time.
Emilio Aristizábal scored in the 93rd minute, completing Toronto’s stunning comeback and sending BMO Field into celebration. Toronto turned a 1–0 deficit into a 2–1 victory in the final stages. �
Toronto FC showed considerable character. After conceding an unfortunate own goal inside three minutes, the Reds refused to unravel. Sallói’s 72nd-minute equalizer gave them belief, and Aristizábal’s stoppage-time strike completed one of Toronto’s most dramatic victories of the season.
The 2–1 victory over Nashville, who entered the match as MLS leaders with 53 points, is particularly significant for a Toronto side that had been sitting on 26 points before kickoff.
