Blue Jays’ bats get silenced in shutout loss to the Red Sox

The Toronto Blue Jays got shutout by the Boston Red Sox, as their bats were super quiet on Wednesday night.

Chris Bassitt (9-12, 4.41) got the start for the Blue Jays, and needless to say, he didn’t get any support from his teammates. The veteran right hander tossed 6 2/3 innings, allowing just one run over five hits, walking one and punching out nine, taking his 13th loss of the year.

Brayan Bello (11-6, 4.95) took the ball for the Red Sox, and he put on a spectacular performance. Bello threw 8 innings, allowing no runs on just two hits, walking one and striking out nine to earn his 12th victory of the year. Bello had only pitched into the 8th inning just once previously in his career, and up to this point, had never recorded more than 24 outs.

The Red Sox got on the board first, when Wilyer Abreu drove Tristan Casas in with an RBI single, giving Boston a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st.

The score stayed at 1-0 until the bottom of the 8th, when B.C. native Tyler O’Neill sent a ball to deep centre field for a two run shot, extending the Red Sox lead to 3-0.

Veteran closer Kenley Jansen (3-2, 2.78) then pitched a perfect 9th inning to tie the series at two and secure his 25th save of the year.

Both teams will look to secure the series with a third win on Thursday night. The Blue Jays will send red hot Bowden Francis (7-3, 4.02) to the bump as the Red Sox will have Kutter Crawford (8-11, 4.19) start for the rubber match on Thursday.
