Team Canada opened its FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Friday afternoon at Toronto Stadium aka BMO Field, Earning the nation’s first-ever point at a men’s FIFA World Cup.

Canada controlled much of the play throughout the match but found itself trailing 1-0 after Jovo Lukic scored for Bosnia and Herzegovina in the 21st minute. The Canadians continued to press forward, creating numerous scoring opportunities and maintaining pressure on the visitors.

Head coach Jesse Marsch’s substitutions proved decisive in the second half. Striker Cyle Larin came off the bench in the 76th minute and made an immediate impact, scoring the equalizer just two minutes later. Larin’s goal in the 78th minute sent the Toronto crowd into celebration and secured a valuable point for the hosts.

Canada dominated possession and generated several dangerous chances throughout the contest but was unable to find a second goal. Goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau also made key saves to keep the Canadians within striking distance before Larin’s heroics rescued the result.

The draw marks a historic moment for Canadian soccer. In their previous World Cup appearances in 1986 and 2022, Canada failed to earn a point, losing all six matches combined. Friday’s result therefore represents a significant milestone for the national program and keeps Canada in a strong position in Group B.

Canada’s next match comes on June 18 against Qatar in Vancouver, where the Reds will look to build on their encouraging opening performance and move closer to advancing to the knockout stage.
