The Toronto Blue Jays completed a three-game sweep of the Boston Red Sox with a dramatic 4-3 victory Thursday afternoon at Fenway Park.
Toronto broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the ninth inning when Brandon Valenzuela delivered a clutch two-out RBI double, scoring Ernie Clement with the winning run. The hit capped another resilient effort by the Blue Jays, who improved to 5-1 against Boston this season.
The Blue Jays received home runs from Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Nathan Lukes, helping build a 3-1 lead against Red Sox starter Sonny Gray. Gray worked seven innings but settled for a no-decision after allowing three runs.
Rookie starter Trey Yesavage turned in a strong outing, allowing three runs while striking out six over 7⅓ innings. He carried a lead into the eighth before Boston tied the game on back-to-back solo home runs by Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Caleb Durbin.
After Valenzuela’s go-ahead hit in the ninth, reliever Tommy Nance earned the victory, while Mason Fluharty recorded the first save of his major-league career with a perfect bottom of the ninth inning.
The sweep sends Toronto into its upcoming series against the Chicago Cubs with momentum after taking all three games in Boston. The Red Sox, meanwhile, dropped their fourth straight game and continued to struggle offensively with runners in scoring position throughout the series.
