The Toronto Blue Jays came up just short on Thursday night, falling 6-5 to the Texas Rangers at Rogers Centre after an early offensive explosion by the visitors proved too much to overcome.
The Rangers wasted little time, with Joc Pederson leading off the game with a home run before Texas erupted for five runs in the third inning. Wyatt Langford delivered the biggest blow with a three-run homer, while Jake Burger added a two-run shot to give the Rangers a commanding 6-0 advantage.
The Blue Jays finally answered in the fifth inning. Davis Schneider drove in a run with a sacrifice fly before Myles Straw lined a two-run double to cut the deficit to 6-3.
Kevin Gausman battled through six innings but was tagged for six runs on 10 hits while striking out four, suffering his sixth consecutive winless start. Meanwhile, Rangers left-hander MacKenzie Gore settled in after Toronto’s fifth-inning rally, allowing three runs over seven innings to earn the victory.
Toronto mounted one final push in the ninth. Kazuma Okamoto crushed a two-run home run—his 18th of the season—to bring the Blue Jays within one. However, Rangers closer Jacob Latz retired Alejandro Kirk on a ground ball before striking out pinch-hitter Brandon Valenzuela to end the game and record his 15th save.
The loss dropped Toronto to 39-42 on the season and continued a frustrating trend of letting close games slip away. Despite the defeat, the Blue Jays showed resilience by battling back from a six-run deficit, but their comeback fell just short as Texas opened the four-game series with a 6-5 victory.
