The Boston Bruins defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-1 in game one of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
John Beecher scored 2:26 into the first period to give the Boston Bruins an early 1-0 lead.
Jeremy Swayman made 11 saves in the first period to keep the Bruins lead at one.
In the second period, Brandon Carlo’s shot went past Ilya Samsonov to put the Bruins up 2-0.
Before the goal, Auston Matthews had an open net but hit the post.
Penalties would be costly for Toronto as Auston Matthews was called for high-sticking. Boston would capitalize on the power-play with a goal from Jake DeBrusk, going up 3-0.
Max Domi was called for slashing minutes later, and Jake DeBrusk made the Leafs pay again, making it 4-0.
In the third period, Toronto got some life as David Kampf made it 4-1.
Toronto pulled their goalie, and Trent Frederic scored into the empty net, making it 5-1.
Jeremy Swayman was the game’s star, making 35 saves on 36 shots.
Toronto will need more from their players if they want to even the series.
Game two takes place Monday night in Boston at the TD Garden. Puck drop will be at 7:00p.m on Sportsnet/CBC.
