Edmonton Elks 42, Toronto Argonauts 12

It was a rough afternoon for the Toronto Argonauts, who were overwhelmed by the Edmonton Elks in a 42–12 loss at Commonwealth Stadium.

The defeat drops Toronto to 4–5, while Edmonton improves to 7–3.

Toronto struggled to generate sustained offence throughout the afternoon. The Argos managed only 287 total yards, including just 45 rushing yards, while Edmonton piled up 431 yards and controlled possession for 37:40.

The biggest problem was turnovers. Toronto threw two interceptions and also lost two fumbles, repeatedly giving Edmonton extra opportunities.

The Elks gradually pulled away after a relatively competitive opening half, then dominated the second half to turn the game into a rout.

Toronto: 12 points

Edmonton: 42 points

Toronto total yards: 287

Edmonton total yards: 431

Toronto rushing: 45 yards

Edmonton rushing: 158 yards

Toronto passing: 277 yards

Edmonton passing: 301 yards

Time of possession: Edmonton 37:40, Toronto 22:20

Turnovers: Toronto 4, Edmonton 0

What it means

The Argos had entered the game on a high after their 33–30 victory over Calgary, but this was a major step backward. Toronto’s four turnovers and inability to establish the running game made it extremely difficult to compete with an Edmonton team that protected the football and controlled the line of scrimmage.

Bottom line: Toronto’s offence and ball security let them down badly. At 4–5, the Argos remain in the playoff race, but they need a strong response when they return home.

Next up: Toronto hosts the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on August 22 at BMO Field
