Storming Back

Seth Jarvis played hero in another thrilling Stanley Cup final’s game, scoring the winning goal in overtime to tie the series at one apiece as the teams head to Vegas for game three.

After they combined for nine goals on Tuesday night, both squads were focused on defence and limiting their mistakes. For the better part of 2 1/2 periods, the game largely followed that script, but two plays stood out. Brett Howden snuck behind the Carolina defence twice, and both times it resulted in partial-breakaway goals.

The first came at 13:33 of the first period off a stretch pass from Mitch Marner. The second came at 7:23 of the second period on an assist by Ivan Barbashev.

Carolina was in desperation mode. Coming back after going 0-2 at home in the the Finals would have presented a daunting task- only two other teams in Stanley Cup history have fought back from that deficit to win the Cup.

A furious Hurricanes rally, a controversial no-goal for Vegas late, and a tying goal that came after the net was pulled turned the game upside down.

Carolina got on the board at 10:20. Logan Stankoven made an outstanding individual play, stealing the puck from Rasmus Andersson behind the net, then coming out in front and backhanding it into the goal before Carter Hart could get his pad down.

Then, at 12:46, Mark Jankowski tied the game, scooping up the puck from a scramble of bodies just inside the Vegas blue line and firing it past Hart to make it 2-2.

Vegas believed it had retaken the lead on a puck that slipped behind Freddie Andersen after a scramble in front of the net, but it was ruled a no-goal on the ice. A Toronto review reaffirmed the call and the failed challenge resulted in a Las Vegas penalty.

Jordan Staal scored on the ensuing power play, tipping in a Shane Gostisbehere shot at 15:25.

But the game was far from over.

With the Vegas net empty, Marner flung the puck toward the the Carolina goal. Mark Stone swiped it past Andersen to tie the game 3-3 at 18:39 of the third.

Neither team could score in the closing moments, so Game 2 went to overtime.

It didn’t last long after Jordan Staal drew a penalty on Tomas Hertl.

Seth Jarvis delivered the power-play game winner at 3:56, ripping a Gostisbehere pass by Conner Hart for a 4-3 overtime victory.

The series now shifts to Vegas, where the teams square off Saturday night for Game 3.
