WWE NXT delivered a major night of championship developments, shocking betrayals and tag-team turmoil as the brand continued its march toward Halloween Havoc. The biggest development came in the main event, where Mason Rook defeated Tony D’Angelo and Saquon Shugars in a Triple Threat to become the No. 1 contender for the NXT Championship.
Mason Rook Wins No. 1 Contender’s Match
The main event featured three former teammates battling for the right to challenge NXT Champion Grayson Waller.
Tony D’Angelo, Mason Rook and Saquon Shugars traded power moves throughout a physical contest. D’Angelo hit a double powerbomb, while Shugars delivered a reverse frog splash. Tristan Angels briefly interfered, allowing the match to continue into its decisive stretch.
D’Angelo’s back gave out during a suplex attempt, opening the door for Rook. Rook hit a Blue Thunder Bomb and followed with a top-rope splash for the three-count.
Winner and new No. 1 contender: Mason Rook. Waller immediately appeared afterward, holding his championship in Rook’s face as the next NXT title program took shape.
Kali Armstrong Defeats Lizzy Rain
Kali Armstrong overcame Lizzy Rain in a competitive women’s division matchup.
Rain repeatedly attacked Armstrong’s arm and mounted several comeback attempts, including a super hurricanrana. Armstrong survived the challenge and eventually connected with the Kali Connection for the victory.
After the match, Skylar Raye attacked Armstrong, forcing officials to intervene.
DarkState Defeats Legacy and Van Dux
DarkState’s Osiris Griffin and Cutler James defeated Sean Legacy and Dorian Van Dux in an energetic tag-team battle.
Legacy and Van Dux produced several spectacular dives, including a shooting-star press, but their momentum was stopped when Dion Lennox interfered, allowing DarkState to hit a double powerbomb for the victory.
The situation became even more chaotic afterward when Birthright attacked Legacy and Van Dux. Zilla Fatu eventually arrived to make the save and dropped Charlie Dempsey with a Samoan Spike.
Myles Borne Betrays Tavion Heights Again
One of the night’s most dramatic segments involved former partners Myles Borne and Tavion Heights.
Borne appeared to sincerely apologize for attacking Heights at Heatwave. Heights eventually accepted the apology and the two embraced, seemingly repairing their friendship.
The reconciliation was a trap.
Borne immediately struck Heights with Borne Again, threw him into the barricade and then placed a steel chair around Heights’ ankle before stomping it.
The attack transformed Borne’s apology into another devastating betrayal and intensified what is now a personal rivalry between the former tag-team partners.
Vanity Project Steal Another Victory
NXT Tag Team Champions Vanity Project defeated Cruz Montana and EK Prosper in non-title action.
Montana and Prosper controlled significant portions of the match, but outside interference from Jackson Drake changed the complexion of the finish.
Ricky Smokes and Brad Baylor ultimately used an illegal assisted backslide to pin Prosper and escape with the victory.
Women’s Division Erupts
NXT Women’s Champion Kelani Jordan came to the ring and was interrupted by AAA Reina de Reinas Champion La Catalina, NXT Women’s North American Champion Zaria, and Thea Hail.
The four women traded challenges before the situation became physical. Catalina and Hail eventually stood together after the confrontation, setting up a tag-team match for next week’s NXT.
Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Returns
General Manager Robert Stone announced that the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic is returning.
The tournament will feature 14 teams, with competitors coming from across WWE and AAA. The tournament brackets are expected to be revealed later.
What’s Next
The major story heading forward is Mason Rook vs. Grayson Waller. Rook has earned his NXT Championship opportunity, while Waller now has a dangerous new challenger.
The tag-team division will also receive a major boost with the return of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.
Next week’s announced action includes La Catalina & Thea Hail vs. Kelani Jordan & Zaria, while Sean Legacy, Dorian Van Dux and Zilla Fatu are scheduled to face Birthright.
