The Toronto Raptors gave fans at Scotiabank Arena something to cheer about Friday night, pulling off a strong comeback to defeat the Phoenix Suns 122 to 115 on March 13.
With the playoffs getting closer, this was the type of win Raptors fans have been waiting for. The energy was there, the offense found its rhythm late, and the team showed the kind of fight that has been missing in a few recent games.
Phoenix controlled parts of the night early. The Suns held a small lead at halftime and looked comfortable heading into the fourth quarter. Toronto trailed entering the final frame and even faced a double digit deficit early in the quarter.
The Raptors refused to let the game slip away (and we really need more games like that)!
Toronto turned up the pressure defensively and started attacking the basket. The crowd came alive as the Raptors went on a huge run to completely flip the momentum. The fourth quarter surge powered Toronto to a comeback victory in front of the home fans.
The biggest performance of the night came from Brandon Ingram, who led the Raptors with 36 points. Every time the offense needed a bucket, Ingram stepped up and delivered. His shot making down the stretch helped fuel the comeback and gave Toronto the offensive spark they needed.
RJ Barrett continued his strong stretch with 22 points. The Canadian forward attacked the rim with confidence and hit several key baskets as the Raptors chipped away at the Suns lead.
Immanuel Quickley added 17 points and helped keep the offense moving with strong ball movement and smart decision making. Scottie Barnes contributed 14 points while also making his presence felt defensively with key stops and hustle plays.
Toronto also received valuable contributions from Ja’Kobe Walter, who finished with 12 points and provided important energy off the bench.
Phoenix had some big offensive performances as well. Jalen Green led the Suns with 34 points and kept their offense moving for much of the game. Devin Booker added 31 points and hit several tough shots throughout the night. Grayson Allen chipped in 15 points for Phoenix.
The difference came in the fourth quarter. Toronto outscored Phoenix in the final period as the defense tightened up and the offense started finding better looks.
Where the Raptors Stand in the East
With the win, Toronto improved to 37 and 29 on the season. The Raptors remain right in the middle of the Eastern Conference playoff race as the regular season heads toward its final stretch.
First place in the East is still several games away. Teams like Boston and Milwaukee have held the top spots for most of the season. For Toronto to realistically challenge for first place they would need a long winning streak combined with some losses from those teams.
Right now the more realistic goal is climbing the standings and securing the best playoff seed possible.
What Needs To Happen
The formula is becoming clear.
Toronto needs continued scoring from Brandon Ingram, RJ Barrett, and Immanuel Quickley while Scottie Barnes continues to impact the game on both ends of the floor. When those four are playing well at the same time the Raptors offense becomes very difficult to defend.
The defense also has to stay locked in the way it did during the fourth quarter comeback. That intensity is what can turn close games into wins.
The playoffs are getting closer and Raptors fans are hoping this comeback victory can spark a strong run to finish the season.
👏 Let’s Go Raptors 👏
