OG Anunoby tipped in a Jalen Brunson missed three-pointer with 1.2 seconds left to complete a 29-point comeback and give the Knicks an improbable 107–106 victory, leaving New York just one game away from the first NBA championship in 53 years.
From the get-go, it looked like the series was heading back to San Antonio at 2–2. The Spurs shot lights out in the first quarter, hitting 6 of 10 from three-point range and 15 of 23 overall to build a 41–22 lead. Devin Vassell and Victor Wembanyama led the way with 12 and 13 points, respectively.
The hot shooting continued in the second quarter as the Spurs hit 8 of 16 from three-point range and stretched their lead to 27, 76–59, heading into halftime.
Out of the dressing room, the Knicks were determined to make a game of it, slowly but surely clawing their way back. New York went on a 13–0 run at one point during the third quarter and held the Spurs to only 14 points. Still, they trailed by 19 going into the final period.
New York’s defence remained in shutdown mode , forcing four turnovers in the final quarter and holding Wembanyama to 2-of-9 shooting. On the other end, the Knicks’ offense finally found its rhythm—hitting six of 10 shots from three-point range—catching fire just in time to steal the game away and secure the win.
Brunson let all scores with 36 points. The hero, Anunoby added 33.
The Knicks will try to raise the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy on Saturday in San Antonio.
