The Toronto Blue Jays came up just short on Friday night, falling 5-4 to the Texas Rangers at Rogers Centre.
Texas jumped on Blue Jays starter Patrick Corbin early, scoring three runs in the first inning before adding two more in the third to build a 5-0 lead. Justin Foscue paced the Rangers’ offence with a two-run home run and three RBIs, while Nathan Eovaldi kept Toronto’s bats quiet through seven scoreless innings.
The Blue Jays finally broke through in the eighth inning with a four-run rally. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. led the charge with two hits and two RBIs, while Toronto cut the deficit to just one run and brought the Rogers Centre crowd to life. However, the Rangers’ bullpen shut the door in the ninth inning, ending the comeback bid.
Toronto finished with nine hits but couldn’t overcome its slow start, dropping its fourth consecutive game and falling to 39-43 on the season. The Blue Jays will look to even the series when they continue their weekend set against the Rangers on Saturday afternoon.
